CANCELED due to Hurricane Helene damage- extensive trail work is required. Barbara's next walk on the Refuge will be in April. Barbara Woodmansee, author of Friends' Butterfly Guidebook and a Friends' former board member is leading a fall butterfly walk. The last one produced as many as 23 different species of butterflies on a relatively short walk. Without her expert guidance, many if not the majority might have been missed by the uneducated eye. We will walk the Tram Ridge Trail. There is no fee for this event. We will start to gather at 9:15 a.m. at the River Trail/Tram Ridge Trail parking area. At 9:30 Barbara will give an introductory talk. We will start walking after Barbara's talk and finish by 12:00. We will not cover a lot of distance, and we will be walking very slowly, watching the sides of the trail for our butterflies. It will be good to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and bug spray. Binoculars or a camera are also helpful to spot butterflies which are often small and camouflaged. Barbara Woodmansee, in the green visor, points out a detail in her butterfly publication.
