Who Joins Friends? Why?

Friends are people who believe in protecting wildlife and its habitat. People become part of the Friends of the Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges because protecting wildlife and its habitat is what the Refuges are all about. It is their mission. Friends join to be part of an organization that builds support for the Refuges and helps them protect the environment we value.

The Board of Directors meets regularly to organize activities and manage the Friends efforts to achieve all of the organization's goals. All are welcome to attend. The many initiatives, publications, and activities of the Friends are described and available throughout this website. And we have a Wish List of items that would expand Friends reach and help build community support for the Refuges.

Wish List

We have created this list for those of you looking to help with our mission in a more specific way. Any amount that you donate is helpful. As a non-profit we run on the power of our members' commitment to our Refuges, their annual and life membership dues, and donations from both our members and the community at large.

If you would like to help with one or more of these items, please contact us at friends@friendsofrefuges.org

Vista Restoration and Museum- $500- $100,000
Any amount allows us to continue repairing the Vista properties toward an eventual museum and visitor center.

Mobile Welcome Trailer

At present, our refuge (53,000 acres) does not have a visitor center/welcome desk or staff. A mobile welcome center would allow Friends to provide visitor services both on and off the refuge, at both refuge locations (Cedar Key and Lower Suwannee), and on both sides of the river (Dixie and Levy counties), meeting people where they are.
  • Do you have a 10'-16' long enclosed trailer you would like to donate?
  • Gifts of any amount gets us closer, $500-$14,000

Print 2500 brochures- $380
We keep 6 popular brochures in stock and distribute them free of charge to the Cedar Key Visitor Center, the Suwannee Tech Center, and brochure holders throughout the refuge.

A Year of Adobe Design Software-$360
Our graphic work on brochures and interpretive panels is done by volunteers in-house and we use professional software which, unfortunately, isn't free.

A Year of Website Hosting-$360

Our website and News Brief are our most effective outreach tools. So far we get by with free software for the News Brief but not for the website.
