Established in 2001, we are a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting the mission of our two Refuges. Our all-volunteer group promotes awareness of the Refuges' habitats, cultural sites, and rewilding programs — working through dialogue, education, and example to deepen public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of these lands as part of a larger ecosystem. We advocate for habitat conservation and the protection of the lands, waters, and wildlife of the Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges.

We are proud to have cultivated an engaged 14-member board, more than 300 members, 700 newsletter subscribers, and 30 active outreach volunteers. Our track record includes numerous large and small projects benefiting the Refuges, among them two Florida State Historic Preservation grants totaling $125,000. When the Lower Suwannee's visitor services ranger retired, Friends stepped in to fill the gap — organizing outreach events and developing more than 20 trail brochures and 35 interpretive panels. Our content-rich website, friendsofrefuges.org, consistently ranks at the top of searches for local outdoor activities.
