Operation Outdoor Freedom at the Refuge

1/11/2023

Refuge Deputy Manager John Stark and Engineering Equipment Operator George Pelt, both veterans themselves, recently hosted several wounded veterans for Operation Outdoor Freedom's Special Hog Hunt.  Operation Outdoor Freedom is a Refuge partnership with the Florida Forest Service, Dixie County, and local businesses that donate time, money, people, and facilities to allow selected veterans to hunt on the Refuge over a special 3-day season on and along the Dixie Mainline. Only feral hogs are targeted.  This provides wounded and disabled veterans a cost-free, professionally- guided hunt, in an area where there is no other hunt activity. It a special opportunity for those who have served in our armed forces and for us to have a chance to be their hosts.

I am a 78 year Vietnam era veteran with a VA disability. I want very much to go hog hunting with a good friend of mine who is a Vietnam veteran. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. 9542184659

Mr. White,

There were no special hunts scheduled by the State of Florida's Operation Outdoor Freedom on the Refuge this year.

We routinely offer 100 days of hunting with 74 of those days open for hogs.

Check the Hunt/Fish tab on this website for all such information.

Feel free to call on my cell (703.622.3896) if you have further questions.

Take care and good hunting!
