The Refuge has scheduled five Open Houses at Seahorse Key for 2023.
  • Wednesday, March 15, 2023 (rain date March 16 or 17), 9 am-3 pm
  • Wednesday, March 29 (rain date March 30 or 31), 9 am-3 pm
  • Saturday, July 1, 9 am-3 pm
  • Friday, October 13 (rain date October 14), 9 am-3 pm
  • Friday, November 10 (rain date November 11), 9 am-3 pm
Visitors can walk up to to the Light Station and cross over to the beach on the far side of the island. It is a beautiful, adventuresome experience.

Open Houses are free once you arrive at the Refuge island. However, visitors must arrange their own transportation. Shuttles are provided for a fee by tour companies in Cedar Key, or visitors can arrive by private boat.
Important Information

Seahorse Key is an island almost 3 miles from Cedar Key. Access is only by boat. There are no amenities, such as food or water on the island. Rest room facilities are limited.

Should there be a medical or other emergency requiring professional assistance or evacuation, response times could be lengthy.
Please plan with this in mind.

Why no early notice on this date for the light house ?

It is announced on the homepage of this website as an Upcoming Activity. It also was posted on our blog page on February 8, with a reminder on March 16, and announced in both the February and the March News Briefs. Sorry you missed those.

IS the lighthouse going to be open on October 13th as noted?

If we come by private boat, is there a place to dock while we visit?

Hi Fay. Check the note from Refuge Manager Andrew Gude on the 6/8/2023 post. Essentially he says that if the contractor who is rebuilding the dock does not finish by the Open House next weekend, it will not be possible to tie off at the dock. You can go around to the beach, anchor off the beach, and hike up the hill to the lighthouse and down to the lab near the dock.

Yes, the October 13 Open House is going forward as planned. This is the more recent announcement https://www.friendsofrefuges.org/our-blog-what-we-do/seahorse-key-open-house6243156

We are just planning the March and July open houses. Once final we will post on the Friend's website.
