This beautiful video of the Milky Way was taken at Shell Mound by Kathleen Finnerty. Refuge Manager Andrew Gude was able to provide a Special Use Permit to allow access at night to do the filming. She granted permission for us to share the video with you. Click the photo to view it.

Spectacular Kathleen, thank you! I should be able to infer this from stars, but rather than guess, which day was this and what compass direction is your camera facing?

Hi, Ken! Thank you for your interest! The stills and time-lapse videos were all taken on the night of the 'new moon'- September 6th. The cameras were facing east - southeast over the marsh.

Thanks Kathleen. Getting my bearings on how this relates to landscape features, like dunes, that mirror the solstices. 9/15/2021 04:12:05 pm
Wow and super wow. To be able to capture part of God’s creation like that is just wonderful. Thank you for sharing with us.
